Pedophilia indicates a sexual and/or romantic attraction to children, just as “gay,” “straight” and “bi” generally indicate attraction to genders. A celibate or abstinent person may be any of these, and it is erroneous to presuppose that a person who experiences attraction to children or youth must act upon that attraction in any manner, sexual or otherwise. Therefore, pedophilia is perfectly legal and morally neutral. While sexual contact between adults and minors is illegal, the attraction itself is not, and it is the attraction–not the action–that defines pedophilia. There are a great many pedophiles who live their lives obeying sex laws. On the other hand, the majority of people who do violate sex laws regarding children are not actually pedophiles.

The result of misusing the term ‘pedophile’ to mean anything other than ‘person attracted to children’ is that law-abiding pedophiles living peaceful, private lives are needlessly stigmatized by society, leading to further isolation and the degradation of their mental health. Having to live a life in which one must choose law over love, when most of society does not have to make such a choice, represents a profound sacrifice for many. Society needs to recognize that most pedophiles do precisely that and should strive not to stigmatize them as it currently does. Instead, it should work to provide these people with not only the freedom to publicly acknowledge their orientation, but with full rights to social participation and self-expression without fear of ostracism, discrimination or persecution.

I would urge you to reconsider the wording of your statements and to pay special attention in the future to not use incorrect terminology.

Did you know the average age someone finds out they’re attracted to prepubescent children is 14? ( psycnet.apa.org/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2Fabn0000212 ) Those people are called MMAPs, which stands for “minor minor-attracted person” – This means that there are adolescents out there (maybe this was even sent by one) who are attracted to six year olds. This is a known fact in the scientific community surrounding this field. People don’t just “become pedophiles” as adults, and pedophilia is not an action.

This is where you can show you care about kids, ALL kids.

What do you think life is like for the 14 year old that finds out they’re a MMAP? They see what people say about people like them online every day. They think society has abandoned them.

Recently, a group called Para Files celebrated the suicide of a non-offending MAP ( mapsupport.de/@MEDAL/113307092255567202 ) News of this spread to spaces where MMAPs socialize. Celebrating any suffering as a victory is wrong – But how do you think those kids felt seeing that community celebrating a suicide? What message does behavior like this send?

The answer to protecting children is in advocating for better mental health awareness. Spreading this information is a start. People who feel supported and connected are less likely to become abusive. Supported people are also more likely to seek help when needed.
